Family is a unique gift that needs to be appreciated and treasured, even when they're driving you crazy. As much as they make you mad, interrupt you, annoy you, curse at you, try to control you, these are the people who know you the best and who love you. Jenna Morasca

Family portraits tell the story of your family at significant times in it's growth and development.

Drew's fine art images will immediately draw attention to the faces of those you love and cherish. Wall art portraits are always hand printed, usually in black and white, and professionally framed behind museum quality glass, enabling you to enjoy and celebrate your family, and to hand on your precious heirloom for generations to come.

Holy Communion http://www.drewmcwilliams.com/blog/2018/6/holy-communion Black and white photograph of little girl making First CommunionFirst Holy Communion photographs by Drew McWilliamsAngelic for her First Holy Communion
It was my pleasure to photograph St Colman's Primary School First Holy Communion, as I have done for a number of years now. My goodness I've been photographing some of these children since they were babies and it's so lovely to see them all grown up and taking this important step in their church life.

When I photograph I'm aware that these images will be very important to the children. Not today or next week, of course - at their age all they want to do is enjoy the party and get out to play!

But as they grow older; work; move out of their parent's house; start a family of their own....

I want their children and grandchildren to say, "Wow, you were  cool!" AND for them to be able to nod and say, "Yes, I was rather!"

Black and white photograph of young boy making his First CommunionFirst Holy Communion photography by Drew McWilliams, Northern IrelandCool guy making his First Communion
I'm also aware how important First Holy Communion is in the life of the family and particularly for the parents. I hope they will always look back on the day, through my images, with pleasure and satisfaction.

Whilst photographing the families, one of the most significant - I think - actions that I take is often to put the child's hand in a parent's. No matter where in the world the child travels, the parent will always have that memory of the tiny hand on his.

Black and white photograph of family celebrating a child's First CommunionFirst Holy Communion photography by Drew McWilliams, Northern IrelandThe first time a family member makes their Holy Communion is an exciting event for the whole family.

Let me put your family in my frame - because family is the most important thing in the world!

From the heart http://www.drewmcwilliams.com/blog/2018/5/from-the-heart First Holy Communion dressFirst Holy First Holy Communion

Lord,
I can’t say it in words…
Can you please just listen
through my heart…..

How precious is this dress, veil AND little girl?

Actually, the dress was made by her mother and the veil is from her mother's own First Communion. Made from Carrickmacross Lace it was bought for her mum's First Communion by a much loved aunt.

How will will this image be treasured by this little girl's mum and dad AND, in time, her own children?

First Communion is a time of great excitement at home, in the school, and in the church. It's a milestone for the children and their families, the memories of which will remain with them throughout their life.

Often we hear the quote from older people, "I wish I'd spent less time in the office". I would certainly concur. The hours I spent in school as a primary head teacher after school, at weekends and during the holidays mean nothing to me now and the young family, that I have to admit at times I neglected, were growing up and I was sometimes almost unaware.

“Consider a small child sitting on his mother's lap while she reads him a picture book. The picture book opens to a width that effectively places the child at the centreer of a closed circle - that of mother's body, arms, and the picture book...

That circle, so private and intimate, is a place apart form the demands and stresses of daily life, a sanctuary in and from which the child can explore the many worlds offered in picture books.

Despite all of our society's technological advances, it still just takes one child, one book, and one reader, to create this unique space, to work this everyday magic.”
Martha V. Parravano

I encourage my family clients to "read" their wall portraits to their children regularly as they grow - when the photographs were made and why, who was there, what also happened that week, month and year.

I won’t always wake, Daddy,
… For cuddles through the night
And one day you’ll miss
Having a chocolate face to wipe.

You won’t always wake to find my foot,
is kicking you out of bed,
Or find me sideways on your pillow,
Where you want to lay your head.

You won’t always have to carry me
In asleep from the car,
Or piggy back me down the road
When my little legs can’t walk that far.

So cherish every cuddle,

10 things to thank you mum for http://www.drewmcwilliams.com/blog/2018/3/10-things-to-thank-you-mum-for Black and white family photographFamily photography by Drew McWilliams, Northern IrelandMum is the centre of her family

I came across this piece by Christa Cutler and ticked off each item on the list. What about you?

Moms are the best. They care for you, love you and support you. There are some roles that moms are best at fulfilling. Not to say that someone else can't do these for you, but these things are especially comforting when a mother does them for you.

Here are ten things moms are saints for doing

1. Have you

Obviously, this is something that only your mom can do for you because this is what makes you her child. But when you stop and think about the time and the pain she went through so you could just be here and breathe, you might want to take a moment to call your mom and say thank you.

2. Feed you

Since the day you were born, you mother has again sacrificed her body and time so you have food to eat. Even if you were bottle-fed, your mother made sure your cries were heard and your tummy was full.

Black and white photograph of mother and her new born baby girlFamily and baby photography by Drew McWilliams, Northern Ireland Mother and baby girl

3. Dry tears

Moms somehow always know how to comfort you. Whether you are crying from a scraped knee or a breakup, your mother was there with one of those reassuring hugs and a hand to hold.

4. Clean up throw-up

Your mom has been there for you even when things get gross. She takes care of you even when you are sick. Not only do moms clean up throw-up, they refill your orange juice glass, find more blankets when you get cold and help you remember to take your medicine. Black and white family photograph of mother and daughterFamily and children's photography by Drew McWilliams, Northern Ireland Mother and daughter are best friends 5. Go to music lessons

Let's get real. At the beginning you weren't that good at your instrument, but your mom stood by your side and encouraged you. Thank her for encouraging you to try new things and for teaching you the importance of practicing.

6. Keep your drawings

Whenever you made something for your mom, no matter how hideous it was, your mom always said thank you and displayed it. Your mom was always proud of you for trying.

Black and white family photograph of mother and daughterFamily photography by Drew McWilliams, Northern Ireland Mother and daughter still close

7. Stay up late for you

When you started going out with friends late at night, your mom wanted to make sure you were safe. She stayed up for you even when she knew she had to get up early in the morning. She asked you questions about how it went, who was there and if you had fun.

8. Pack your lunch ... even when you're an adult

It didn't happen every day, but mom-made lunches are the best. Be sure to thank her for taking the time to make you a delicious meal.

9. Surprise you just because

Whether it's a little gift or taking you out to lunch, your mother loves to spontaneously surprise you and see your smile. She just wants you to be happy.

10. Remember you night and day

No one will remember you like your mom does. She loves who you are and the things you do. She prays for you to be successful and for you to be happy.

Where would we be without our mums?

When I was just seven years of age I had to stay in hospital to have my tonsils out. On the day of my operation, as I was coming round from the anesthetic, I remember turning in the bed and, as I turned, I caught sight of my mum sitting over me. I was so drowsy and sleepy but - given that she had been sitting with me for who-knows-how-long, I couldn't lie with my back to her just in case she thought I didn't care!

I probably didn't make much sense when I did turn round to her and I don't actually remember anything of our conversation then. Likely I fell back to sleep.

But I knew she cared and I certainly felt loved.

Black and white family photography by Drew McWilliams, Northern Ireland Me and my motherThank you, mum!

My mum is still "sitting over me". I need her just as much today as I did that day back in 1962.

You mother has done and continues to do so much for you. Be sure to call her or spend time with her.

Be sure to thank her. Be sure to tell her you love her.

A framed portrait is a wonderful way to say, "Thank you".

Your mum and family will be photographed in full colour before images are uniquely processed in classic black and white.

Drew personally crafts your print using Ultrachrome, pigment based inks on beautiful archival paper.

Your portrait is framed using sustainable products behind museum quality, non-reflective glass.

Guaranteed to be pristine for at least 140 years, your image will become a family heirloom celebrating your mum and your family.

Most companies include headshot portraits to allow prospective clients see who they will be working with.

A great headshot is critical for many marketing and advertising campaigns. Advertisements generally receive better response rates if they include great pictures. Engaging, honest headshots are an important part of showing why your prospective clients should hire you.

You may require a fabulous headshot for social media - Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter. Either way, you can expect Drew to work with you to produce a classic, pleasing portrait.

Priceless http://www.drewmcwilliams.com/blog/2018/2/priceless Black and white family photograph of unconditional love. A father surrounded-by his wife and daughtersfather-surrounded-by-his-wife-and--daughtersA family moment A family portrait photograph should capture the love and joy of family life, but also a landscape that has meaning, life, and is truly representative of the faces in the picture. I love this portrait of a dad - obviously a much loved dad - surrounded by the women in his life.

Just look at the meaning of the look between him and the youngest daughter. Each of the other daughters, in turn, have known that special relationship and enjoy it again.

As they look at this image thorough the years, what memories will it stir?

Capturing such a photograph is so much more than just pointing and shooting with an expensive camera, so much more than textbook knowledge of light and posing, it is based on a combination of the eye and the heart.

Black and white photograph of familyFamily portraits by Drew McWilliams Photography, Northern IrelandThe family photograpy Many people look for happiness in buying material things - clothes, handbags, the latest phone, the most recent reg car - despite the fact the we've all experienced, many times, disappointment as material things lose their dazzle. Within a year or two, they're out of fashion, outdated and the joy they once possessed, a source of irritation if it can't work as well as, say the new iPhone 8 or whatever.

Fine art family portraits don't lose beauty or value because their essence is beyond the physical canvas and frame. They grow in value and joy for as long as you, and your family own them.

I can well imagine this dad's grandchildren, in years to come, admiring and loving this portrait just as much as the family do today.

Many of my clients find that just around the time that the children go off to university is a perfect time to refresh the family portrait.

There are no perfect parents, and there are no perfect children, but there are plenty of perfect moments along the way. Dave Willis

Sometimes its when the family gets back together again after some form of separation, such as a child living and working in another part of the world.

Family" isn't defined only by last names or by blood; it's defined by commitment and by love. It means showing up when they need it most. It means having each other's backs. It means choosing to love each other even on those days when you struggle to like each other. It means never giving up on each other! Dave Willis

They grow up so fast http://www.drewmcwilliams.com/blog/2017/12/they-grow-up-so-fast Black and white family photograph of mother and father with baby sonFamily photography in Northern Ireland by Drew McWilliamsFun with their baby boy There is no denying it.

Enjoy it while they’re little. Everyone says so

They grow so fast.

And that phrase seems both so totally true and so totally false at the same time, because in the day-to-day of it nothing seems fast at all.

A meal can take an eternity. A sleepless night a lifetime. And yet everyone says so:

They grow so fast.

Mother holds her little baby girl and dreams of the wonderful things she'll do as she growsMy babyBlack and white family photography in Northern Ireland by Drew McWilliams

And so I want to hold him in my arms a little longer today, because already my baby is gone. Already there is a little boy in his place. And one day not too far in the future, there will be an older boy in his place, and then a teenager, and then a young man.

And so I keep holding him: heavy on my shoulder, the weight of him substantial, in his nursery where time stands still.

Return of the wanderer http://www.drewmcwilliams.com/blog/2017/11/return-of-the-wanderer adargan091adargan091 So, the big brother comes home from New Zealand for a short holiday - what do you do?

You contact Drew McWilliams for a family portrait!

During your time together you remember all the times you shared growing up, for example, when you guys would go upstairs. It would result in tripping or pulling someone down the stairs. There was perpetually an unspoken rule that going up the stairs together meant you were racing!

adargan084aadargan084a And Whenever your mum would tell you to do something you would go tell another sibling that your mum wanted them to do it.

“We were a strange little band of characters trudging through life sharing diseases and toothpaste, coveting one another’s desserts, hiding shampoo, borrowing money, locking each other out of our rooms, inflicting pain and kissing to heal it in the same instant, loving, laughing, defending, and trying to figure out the common thread that bound us all together.”   Erma Bombeck

1000 miles per hour http://www.drewmcwilliams.com/blog/2017/10/1000-miles-per-hour Black and white photograph of a baby boy, without clothes except for a flat cap, learning to pull himself up with the help of a chair, to walk.Baby boyIf you want to get ahead, get a hat! "You make the small moments special. Life’s not always going to be full of heart-throbbing thrills and non-stop adventure, but when it slows down, I'll know I can sit with you, talk with you, or hold you in my hands, and still feel like I’m going 1000 miles an hour." Beau Taplin

My little grandson has just started to walk (that's not him above). What a delight it is to see how excited he is to be able to drag himself up, to move, to reach and....to RUN!

He's just like his dad was. When Philip could sit, he wanted to stand.
When he could stand, he wanted to walk.
When he could walk, he wanted to run. And he did!

Black and white photograph of two young sisters running in bridesmaid dresses.Girls on the runGirls just want to have fun! I suppose they never stop. Well, until they get to our age....

One day they just take off, fast! It's an important stage in a child's development. It's an important stage in the life of a parent also. From now on time goes much faster too!

By the way, when Philip could run he wanted to fly!
He tried it once or twice too.
The stitches and a couple of hospital visits put paid to that.

Magic moments http://www.drewmcwilliams.com/blog/2017/10/magic-moments wright39bwright39bphoto: drewmcwilliams.com
Perry Como was a tremendous American singer and television personality, probably best known for his 1957 recording of "Magic Moments".

Time can't erase the memory of
These magic moments filled with love

The tune is probably going through your head now!

The song's sentiment comes back to me when I view this image of a mother and her daughters.

How precious will this images be to her as she watches her little one's grow....

Mother: |muth@ er|
n. one who loves and cares for
her children; v. to watch over,
nourish, and protect.

And how special will it be for them to share with their own families?

Magic moments, mem'ries we've been sharin'
Time can't erase the memory of
These magic moments filled with love

How do you want to be remembered by your family 20, 30....50 years from now?

Would you like Drew to capture this chapter of your family story?

Laughter in the family photograph http://www.drewmcwilliams.com/blog/2017/10/laughter-in-the-family-photograph Black and white studio photograph of extended family from grandparents to grandchildrenExtended familyThe family - all together I recently heard a well known, and very successful family photographer talk about his work and was impressed with his honesty and humility when he added the very personal statement:

“When I was a teenager, believe me, there was no laughter - and that’s one of the reasons I'm now a family photographer!”

If you have lots of laughter in your family - capture it!

Black and white family photograph of parents and their two young girlsFamily laughterFamily photography in Belfast and London by Drew McWilliams Capture it because it’s your story!
Capture it because it’s worth holding on to;
Capture it because it’s more valuable than anything else;
Capture it because memories become more precious as the years go by.
Capture it because it’s an essential part of your family story that you want to have available for your children and to future generations of your family.

What's really important? http://www.drewmcwilliams.com/blog/2017/10/whats-really-important Black and white photograph of newly wed couple enjoying a glass of champagne and a Bentley carWedding coupleCelebrating wedding with champagne

Ask yourself what is really important and then have the courage to build your life around your answer.

That's what Joanne and Kenny did and today celebrate their 4th wedding anniversary - and their little girl will be helping them to celebrate.

Now, isn't that really important?

Let me help tell your story with a family photo session
- future generations of your family will thank you!
