Can the real summer please stand up!
“The first week of August hangs at the very top of summer, the top of the live-long year, like the highest seat of a Ferris wheel when it pauses in its turning. The weeks that come before are only a climb from balmy spring, and those that follow a drop to the chill of autumn, but the first week of August is motionless, and hot. It is curiously silent, too, with blank white dawns and glaring noons, and sunsets smeared with too much color.” - Natalie Babbitt, Tuck Everlasting

What has happened to our beautiful August weather?
When I was young - and I've checked this with my mum and an old teacher - August days were long, warm and sunny. Dear knows where it all went wrong!
Stay calm and get a tan!
I had a client, who had received a Family Portrait Session token as a retirement gift from his work colleagues, call me to ask if he could delay the session by a couple of weeks.
"Not a problem", says I, "I hope everything is ok."
"Oh yes", says he. "The girls want to get a tan before they're photographed!"
In their defence I have to add that school examinations, including 'A' Levels, were approaching at that time so hopefully that meant that the girls had their heads down and studying hard.
We had a great wee session one morning just before mum had to leave the eldest to primary school.
This is the third time I've photographed this family - the first when the little one still had two weeks to cosy in her mother's womb! The girls are so natural together and I love how mum coordinated the colours and outfits.
