She walks in beauty

The next time you look into the mirror, try to let go of the storyline that says you’re too fat or too sallow, too ashy or too old, your eyes are too small or your nose too big; just look into the mirror and see your face. When the criticism drops away, what you will see then is just you, without judgement, and that is the first step towards transforming your experience of the world. Oprah Winfrey

Black and white photograph of a beautiful young woman against a black, studio background by Drew McWilliams Photography in Northern IrelandBeautiful young womanSmiling with her eyes I photographed Lauren towards the end of last year. She was nervous, shy and wasn’t really sure what to do.

I coaxed her, encouraged her, demonstrated how I wanted her to stand and even think about! After a little while we made a couple of photographs, including the image above.

A couple of months later she was back with her brothers and family for a number of family photographs to celebrate the birth of her little sister.

I photographed each of the brothers - and it took a little while. I made, maybe a dozen frames of each boy - before Lauren stepped forward….

I showed her where I wanted her to sit and WOW!

One shot and I knew I had the image I wanted of a beautiful young woman who is confident of her inner beauty.

How comfortable does she look? How entrancing are those eyes?

So that she - and her parents - didn’t wonder why I had just opened the shutter once for her I had to click a few more times but, to be honest I wasn’t really looking through the viewfinder at all!

The perfect student; the perfect model.

“She walks in beauty, like the night
Of cloudless climes and starry skies;
And all that's best of dark and bright
Meet in her aspect and her eyes...”
― George Gordon Byron
